5 Ways to Jump Start Your Business in 2014


We are well in to the new year…and it’s winter.  If you find that your business has slowed down recently now might be the BEST time to jump start your marketing and business building.  Here are 5 easy ways to get you going:

1.  Learn how to use that iPad | Tablet | Smart Phone | Notebook that you got for Christmas.

Mobile is the THEME of 2014.  Whether you are accessing information or generating it…you need to know how to work with your mobile devices.  It’s that important!  Take the time now to read the online tutorials, browse the help files, and learn how to do your every day business tasks on your mobile device.  YouTube is a GREAT resource for figuring out how to do just about anything.  YouTube it if you don’t find the answer in your manual.  The best way to approach working with your mobile device?  Begin by attempting to complete the every day tasks that you do on your computer.  When you hit a stumbling block, look up the “how to”.  Make sure that you can access your contacts, email, and important social networks that you use to market yourself via your device.

2. Clean out your contacts.

A lull in business is the BEST time to clean out and organize your contact database.  Your database is the bread and butter of your business.  It makes you money and it should be a finely tuned tool.  The more organized your database the more efficient you are at your job.  Create groups for your contacts, update birthdays and business milestone dates, make sure all contacts have an UP TO DATE email address.  Email addresses allow you to easily stay in touch and share valuable information with your clients.  They are the keys to the kingdom.

While you are at it, clean up your Facebook friend list, your twitter followers, and your LinkedIn connections.

3.  Update your marketing.

Make sure your website is the best that it can be.  Are you using your website to generate new content and send newsletters automatically?  If not, then your website is NOT up to date.  Do your marketing materials seem dated or do they contain inaccurate information about old business practices?   Do your business cards have your Twitter handle on them?  No?  Time to update those as well.  Check it all…social media sites, email signatures, printed materials, invoices, etc…  Anything that goes out to your clients either on paper or digitally – it should reflect the new year.

4.  Organize your files.

Is your computer loaded with old photos, multiple versions of documents from 2010, incomplete or abandoned projects? Time to get that tool cleaned out or upgraded.  I don’t recommend rushing out and purchasing a new home computer if the one you have is working properly.  I DO recommend cleaning it up and running some simple diagnostic tools to get it to it’s optimal performance.   If your computer is glitchy, has constant pop ups and seems beyond repair it may be time to upgrade.

5. Learn a new tool.  Pick ONE.

Now there are more FREE and low cost business tools online than ever before.  Now is the best time to pick one, learn it, and implement it into your business.  Tools like Evernote, Mailchimp, Google Drive, and Survey Monkey are all designed for you to connect and interact with your customers easily.  They also help you be more productive.  Just pick ONE new tool to begin with.  If you try to learn several at the same time it may become difficult to put them to use.  You could become overwhelmed.  Selecting one will give you a feeling of accomplishment once you have it mastered.

Looking for an easy way to upload your products or real estate listings to YouTube?  If you are a PC user it’s as simple as creating a slideshow movie in Windows Movie Maker.  You can even easily add audio and Title Slides that include your website and contact information.  Upload the movie to your YouTube Channel and start marketing your products or your real estate listings!

What on EARTH is Geotagging and how can you use it to promote your WordPress Blog??

Geotagging (also written as GeoTagging) is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as a geotagged photograph or video, websites, SMS messages, QR Codes[1] or RSS feeds and is a form of geospatial metadata. These data usually consist of latitude and longitude coordinates, though they can also include altitude, bearing, distance, accuracy data, and place names.

Geotagging can help users find a wide variety of location-specific information. For instance, one can find images taken near a given location by entering latitude and longitude coordinates into a suitable image search engine. Geotagging-enabled information services can also potentially be used to find location-based news, websites, or other resources.[2] Geotagging can tell users the location of the content of a given picture or other media or the point of view, and conversely on some media platforms show media relevant to a given location.

How to use it in your WordPress.com blog:

WordPress.com allows you to geotag your user profile and posts. That means you can assign an earthly location to your account and to each of your posts.

WordPress.com will soon launch a **Geo Search ** feature that will allow people to find your posts based on their locations. To show up in the search results, you need to turn geotagging on and start geotagging your posts.

To start geotagging, you must first activate the feature in your profile. Go to your blog’s admin and click “Users” → “Personal Settings” from the admin menu.

Under “My Location”, click the checkbox to “Enable Geotagging”.

Taking Advantage of This Holiday Season | Boost Your Marketing


I have been reading several stories and blog posts lately that all point towards BOOSTING your online marketing during this holiday season rather than backing it off.  The trend in marketing this year is to take advantage of the fact that people will be doing more online shopping than ever before.  Recent studies also show that although people are returning to work during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, they are more likely to be “surfing the internet” than actually doing work.  An interesting theory… How can YOUR business take advantage of this trend?

How to Impact Your “Local Web Presences”

Fall Business Tip | Are You Mobile?


WordPress.com users…did you know that you have specific settings in your theme that allow you to enable or customize your blog for Mobile Viewers?  Google reports that there are 4 times more MOBILE users surfing the internet this year than there were last year.  Make sure your theme is optimized for MOBILE users.  This includes iPad users.  Some themes even have special settings for the iPad.

To customize your mobile/iPad settings go to Dashboard/Appearance/Mobile or Dashboard/Appearance/iPad.

 

Fall Business Tip | Turn Your Blog Into A Marketing Plan


One of the great advantages of a FREE WordPress.com blog is the ease in which you can turn your blogs into other formats of communication such as email campaigns.  There a several ways to do this.

The first way is simple….

1.  Pick a wordpress.com template that has an email “Sign Up” widget.

Some examples of templates that include this widget are VIGILANCE and TWENTY TEN.

2.  Encourage your existing customers and clients to subscribe to your blog via the widget on your blog.  If you already have permission to email these customers, you can manually add them one at a time.  Each client will receive an email confirming that they do indeed want to subscribe to your blog.

It’s that simple.  Each time you create a new post on your blog your subscribers will receive that post in their inbox.  What could be easier than that?

The second way to do this is through an email campaign service such as MailChimp (which is also free, BTW).  Your free wordpress.com blog comes pre-formatted with an RSS Feed (myblog.wordpress.com/feed).  MailChimp allows you to market to your existing customers via an RSS campaign.  If you have an email LIST with MailChimp you simply need to set up a new campaign that automatically generates emails each time you create a new post on your blog.

  

Each time you create a new blog post you will also be creating content for your email campaign.  No need to duplicate efforts!
